Rationale

This programme examines the nature of contract in the context of E-Commerce and the law relating to data protection and electronic finance and extends students’ knowledge of the law relating to shipping and to international trade.

The structure of the programme is designed in such a way so as to offer candidates the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding in order to face the challenges of the dynamic and complex environment of the law.

Knowledge and Understanding

Students are expected to gain knowledge and understanding of, for example:

  • the nature of contract in the context of E-commerce
  • the domestic and international regulations of the terms, conditions and mode of operation of those conducting E-commerce business
  • the types of contracts, contract issues and potential liabilities involved in establishing an effective trading website
  • the concept of privacy within the framework of the Data Protection Act 1998
  • the regulation of credit transfers and other internet payments in an international context
  • the law relating to shipping
  • marine insurance
  • ancillary contract
  • the ship as property
  • the choice of law/jurisdiction clauses
  • the different types of international commercial contracts and the respective implications for the parties involved
  • the various international conventions applicable to international trade
  • a consideration of bills of lading
