
Rationale
This programme develops an understanding of the nature of international law, its sources and the relationship of international law to domestic law and extends students’ knowledge of the law relating to shipping and to international trade.
The structure of the programme is designed in such a way so as to offer candidates the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding in order to face the challenges of the dynamic and complex environment of the law.
Knowledge and Understanding
- Students are expected to gain knowledge and understanding of, for example:
- the nature, sources and principles of public and private international law
- the relationship of international law to domestic law
- the law relating to shipping
- marine insurance
- ancillary contract
- the ship as property
- the choice of law/jurisdiction clauses
- the different types of international commercial contracts and the respective implications for the parties involved
- the various international conventions applicable to international trade
- a consideration of bills of lading
