IST Physiotherapy department conducted a successful visit to the Athletic Ippotherapy Club of Ekali in order to attend Ippotherapy sessions by the Ippotherapy specialized team of Ekali. Ippotherapy constitutes a developing therapeutic treatment that uses horse movement as a part of a complete treatment plan in order to improve the functional skills of a person. Ippotherapy basic goal is to improve quality of life of the person.
Students were given a tour to the places that sessions were held and observed different approaches to various clinical cases. The scientific coordinator and physiotherapist Mrs Athanasia Laiou (MSc of Paediatrics), supported by a specialized team of physios, educators, speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists and doctors explained the benefits of this approach and also presented various treatment options. Students were also given the opportunity to ride a horse themselves in order to acknowledge in practice how the horse and their biomechanics can influence and contribute to the rehabilitation of different neurological and orthopaedical clinical cases.
